A joint worshop of the DK+ with the Centre of Doctoral Studies of the University of Vienna took place on May 9-10th, 2019.
The first part of the workshop, conducted by Lucas Zinner (Head of the Research Services and Career Development Department of the University), focused on topics relevant to the current and future research life of the students, academic or not, such a responsible conduct in research and research ethics.
For the second part of the workshop we were very excited to host Gareth O'Neill, the outgoing president of Eurodoc (European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers), the body who together with the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA) and Young Academy of Europe (YAE) was instrumental in shaping the Plan S for Open Science in Europe. During the second day, Gareth informed us on various aspects of Open Science and Open Data, and discussed how scientists can take back control of access to scientific publications.

The Climate and Air Quality Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), led by Wilfried Winiwarter together with the DK+ organized a workshop dedicated to nitrogen and its reactive compounds in terms of environmental impact and climate. The event took place on Wednesday February 27th, 2019 at the Theatersaal, of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, in Vienna.
This workshop aims to address the connections between human nutrition and the environmental impact of anthropogenic nitrogen use, as viewed by experts from agricultural, environmental and systems sciences.

The minisymposium: "Microbial Ecology of Marine and Terrestrial Systems", organized in collaboration with the Centre of Functional Ecology, took place in the afternoon of Tuesday, 22 January 2019 at Lecture Hall II, UZAI of the University of Vienna.
5 International Guests visited the the faculty in the course of collaborations in order to enrich scientific exchange.

The worshop “Archaea in Biogeochemical cycles” took place on the 5th of September 2018 as part of the Molecular Biology of Archaea conference (MBOA6) at the Hörsaalzentrum (Court 2/ Hof 2) of the University of Vienna (3.-5. September 2018).
The interdisciplinary MBOA meetings aim at highlighting important advancements in archaea research with a focus on molecular biology, genomics, evolution and ecology, and provides a platform for collaborations and open discussions on novel and controversial topics in the rapidly evolving field.

The DK+ co-organised and sponsored the 5th International Conference on Nitrification and Related Processes, which took place in Vienna from 23-27 July, 2017. The ICoN meetings are the premier biennial opportunity for sharing scientific research related to nitrification, links between nitrification and other processes of the global nitrogen and other elemental cycles, and applications of insights from fundamental science to technical and environmental systems.
The conference chairs for this meeting were Holger Daims, Christa Schleper, and Michael Wagner, while the DK+ students (Anna Mueller, Barbara Bayer) and the DK+ coordinator (Melina Kerou) co-organised the Early Career and Graduate Student Workshop, a satellite event dedicated to young scientists. The majority of the DK+ students had the opportunity to present their work in oral or poster presentations and network with the nitrification community. Furthermore, a public outreach workshop was organized jointly with the Climate and Clean Air Commission and the Comission for Interdisciplinary Ecological Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences as part of ICoN5 to increase public understanding of human impact on global nitrogen cycle and its consequences. The kickoff meeting of the DK+ took place on the 29th and 30th June 2016 at the Konrad Lorenz Institute in Klosterneuburg.
In the context of this meeting, we had the pleasure of hosting talks from two prominent N-cycle researchers:
Prof. Lisa Stein (University of Alberta), talking about Nitrous Oxide production by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea, and Prof. Jan Willem Erisman (Professor of Integrated Nitrogen Studies, VU University of Amsterdam) talking about the modifications on the N-cycle caused by humanity, and the impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems.
